ARMAGEDDON
“A whole civilization will die tonight,” hear our Leader spout,
But no one seems to worry, for he’ll change his mind, no doubt;
To clarify, he’s talking ‘bout the country of Iran,
They’ll die or sign his deal to end the war that he began.
His ranting and his raving fill us all with hopeless shame;
Our country is in shambles, getting worse, and who’s to blame?
Who would have thought it was so easy, breaking all the rules,
Nor that his close advisors are such sycophantic fools!
We’ve had our No Kings protests and we have a lot of friends,
But nothing seems to change, and the destruction never ends;
The Rule of Law is sacred, must be treated in this way,
Let’s wake up, put the brakes on, take some action, save the day.
Just listen to his vile pronouncements, cursing, flagrant lies,
Then read our honored constitution, all this speech defies,
There’s hope the twenty-fifth amendment quickly will be used
Before the world is further harmed by death and cruel abuse.
As I was writing, sure enough, a ceasefire was proclaimed,
But no one knows or can be sure that it will be sustained;
We need a leader, who, with judgment, caring, endless prep,
Can pull us all together, show the world we’re back in step!

When I awoke on January 1st, 2026, I was full of hope that it might be a new beginning. After all, in my experience, when life seems impossible and problems unsolvable, if I adopt optimism and fill my mind and actions with positivity, the pendulum invariably swings, and what seemed hopeless eventually changes for the better. With a lot of work, needless to say.
But in all my many years on this planet, I have never known my country to be in such a precarious position, or the world so topsy-turvy and fearful and confused. And to think we are responsible for the fray! I wonder if a solution is possible at this point. We’ve had many crises and close calls over the years, but never has the democratic and legal base of our society been torn apart.
Our country has never been perfect and has made many mistakes at home and abroad, but through free elections and a viable legal system, an explicit constitution, and a watchful, responsible party system, we have kept sanity and civility at the forefront. That is no longer true. No more are opposition opinions tolerated or respected. No more is our Congress willing to enforce the rules or pass the laws….
However, regardless of all the upheaval, I can see light on the horizon and change in the air. Midterm elections are being fought assiduously, we’ve celebrated a successful moonshot, Artemis II, the world is waking up to the danger of dictators with the defeat of Viktor Orban in Hungary, and just this week the Gay Pride flag that has flown over the Stonewall Park in NYC was restored after the court ordered that Trump and the US Park Service had no right to remove it.
I always appreciate a clever quip!
